There are few violin concertos with such a beautiful, magical introduction as that composed by Jean Sibelius. The orchestra supports the violins, which seem to appear from nowhere and swell to a Finnish inspired melody, before again disappearing back to naught. Although equally virtuosic sections, cheerful melodies and orchestral bursts appear later, it is this unforgettable beginning that makes the concerto one of the most loved in its genre. This season we have entrusted Janine Jansen with the work who, despite her youth, is also a wonderful performer of Bach and Beethoven. Jansen’s talent is phenomenal. She is reminiscent of the young Menuhin when she seemingly and effortlessly enters the depths of the music. Furthermore, she is a beautiful woman, which certainly doesn’t harm her career either…
