A female singer always wants to sing soprano! She perhaps aspires to play the part of Isolde or, in the case of Kožená, perhaps Jenufa or Katja! The voice, however, does not always allow the performer to sing their heart’s desire and as a result, mezzo-sopranos often encounter a problem. What should they sing apart from Carmen? It is no coincidence that great mezzo-sopranos such as Kožená, Bartoli or DiDonao are extremely curious in their approach. They reinterpret this “shortcoming” and turn it to their advantage, presenting us with wonderful, often completely unknown musical works. Tonight Kožená will sing lieder from the early Baroque period and late Renaissance, with a voice which - although always wonderful - has gained even more expression, depth and resonance over the years. |
