Anne-Sophie Mutter

March 9th 2012, 8 p.m. at the Festspielhaus

Anne-Sophie Mutter 01 Photo: Harald Hoffmann Camille Saint-Saëns was a brilliant man. Although today only his opera “Samson and Delilah”, the “Carnival of the Animals” and his Organ Symphony are still played with any regularity, his first Violin Sonata is now beginning to appear on programmes more frequently – a composition which combines passion with elegance. A meritorious work, it will tonight close a programme in which Anne-Sophie Mutter will once again demonstrate her wide and stylistic range. Anne-Sophie Mutter is much more than just a brilliant violinist. She works with sounds in a radical manner, from note to note, from phrase to phrase. Nothing sounds naïve or “pretty”. Here everything seems surprising and new, despite how familiar her audience might be with the works!
