Thermal Water

„SANUS PER AQUAM“, called out one Roman to another 2,000 years ago: “Health through water!” Both were soldiers on a mission in the region of Baden-Baden. “Mens sana in corpore sano,” called out the other in reply – “Healthy body, healthy mind.” But why was it they called out to one another in this place in particular? Because they’d just discovered the thermal springs and had built Baden-Baden’s first baths. This is how they put that miraculous medicinal water to work – the very same water that has since benefitted every visitor to the city. In Baden-Baden, more than 800,000 litres of thermal water gush out of the ground every day, with temperatures of as much as 68°C.

On a 2,000-metre journey from the depths of the earth to the surface, the water collects various minerals: sodium, chloride, fluoride, lithium, silicic acid and boron. These are the substances which lend it healing properties. Whether you wish to treat heart or circulatory problems, metabolic disorders or respiratory diseases: the healing power of Baden-Baden’s springs promotes well-being and recovery.

In addition, due to its warmth and ingredients, the thermal water provides for the circulation of your muscles, your joints and your skin. A soothing effect for body, mind and soul!

Hot Springs

The thermal water originates in the source region of Florentine Hill in Baden-Baden. There are a total of twelve individual sodium chloride springs originating from a depth of around 2,000 metres. The artesian pressure of the earth’s mass forces the water to the surface at temperatures between 56 and 68.8 °C, making them the hottest springs with the highest mineral content throughout Baden-Württemberg. The springs are around 12 to 17 thousand years old and expel approximately 800,000 litres of thermal water every day.

The hot springs formed in diluvium long ago and, since this time, a sinter hill of black, porous limestone has been growing below the springs. Some of this material was cleared away for the construction of Friedrichsbad and the stones were used, for instance, to build the Fettquelle spring structure and the fountains in Lichtentaler Allee.

The black limestone is also partially responsible for the fact that Florentine Hill is warmed through by the sun from early spring to late autumn, which is why some plants not native to the region tend to flourish here.

Characteristics and quality

Thermal water of the Caracalla Therme contains active substances that specifically affect the organism. Adults should not take more than 3 x 10 minutes with appropriate breaks.
